What is it used for?

The 172 is a great first plane for someone to buy. It is a simple airplane to fly, and is relatively affordable to purchase and maintain. It is not the fastest aircraft in the world, so it is not the best for long cross-country flights. With four seats it can be perfect for short $100 hamburger trips with a few friends.

Due to its well-rounded specs this plane is great for flight instruction. Many are IFR certified, so they can be used from private pilot training through instrument training. For someone looking to build hours, most models burn less than 12 GPH of AvGas.

Unfortunately, most models  are neither high performance nor complex; this means that you cannot take your commercial pilot  in this aircraft. Finding something with retractable gear and a adjustable-pitch propeller may be a better option if you are looking for a plane to do your commercial certificate in.

History of the Aircraft

The Cessna Skyhawk was first developed in 1955 as a tricycle-gear variant of the Cessna 170. Originally, it was marketed as an easy-to-fly airplane that a pilot could “drive” through the skies. Over the years this aircraft has become an icon in the aviation community. The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is the most produced airplane on the planet.
